More specifically, Windows Phone 8 Dev Preview people! You can now (with 8.1 Update 1 which you should already have because you're on dev preview like me) use Cortana through your bluetooth as demonstrated !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with a bluetooth-enabled car audio setup; this is freakin' awesome. You can also use Cortana now without unlocking your phone; bringing it even closer to the personal assistant you never knew you didn't need!

Been on 8.1 for a while now and this is seriously the best feature of the phone. It's fantastic.

Have you tried this in your car already? Was it available with regular 8.1? I was led to believe this was a feature just enabled this week

Wasn't available to the public, maybe, but I am not the public ;)

I've been using this for months and now every other way of handling Bluetooth calling and messaging feels vastly inferior. It's actually surprising that this isn't how it was done all along.

Funny, I was just writing about this today in a comment: http://jalopnik.com/one-thing-i-re…

That's pretty neat. It takes a bit of work (not much really) unlike Google Now, which responds to voice command if it's connected to a charger even with the screen off, but still very neat.

*Like Google Now with only one device (Moto X) unless rooted.

Actually, no. Google Now itself received an update that enabled a similar functionality a couple of months ago for all phones. (completely different than Moto X's system though.) As long as the phone's charging, Google Now prompt can be summoned with the screen off. It also allows the prompt to come up on any screen with a voice command. Super handy.

Summoning Cortana isn't so bad: double tapping on my Lumia then holding the search button, but I'm spoiled by hotword detection.

Really? For what devices? I've got two devices running KitKat and it doesn't work on either.

Go to the Voice subsetting then tap on "Ok Google" Detection . New options should be there.

Didn't we talk about this in another thread? Edit: Nope, that was someone else.

Have you found new employment yet?

It's enabled on both of my devices but it won't recognize my speech with the display off. What device are you running this on? Is it rooted? A lot of roms include this feature by default.

I have a Nexus 4, unrooted, running Android 4.4.4. I can confirm that it also works with a T-Mobile HTC One M7, also unrooted and running KitKat.

*Just checked. Works fine. Plug the phone into a charger. Turn screen off. "OK Google" turns screen on with the prompt window open.

What the hell? I've got a Nexus 7 (2013) and an LG G3 and nothing. I'll have to do some digging.

Not yet, though it has only been two weeks. I have some things lined up though, so hopefully that doesn't last too long.

I have a Nexus 7 (2012), unrooted too, and I've set it off accidentally when I was using the prompt on my phone. The feature was rolled out gradually on account-by-account basis, but it should've rolled out to everyone already.

*FYI, it also works with a custom launcher running instead of Google's.

I haven't made the jump. I am too worried I will break the best phone I have! It really is sad that the OS really is good enough to cover up the fact that my phone is not a great phone. Or is that good? Regardless...

I might get the preview if I get a second WP8 device.

I actually really like the new Folders feature. I wasn't sure how they would integrate it with the Live Tiles and all, but it's really fluid and clever.

Get preview for developers. You'll get 8.1 and 8.1 GDR1. Source: My 920 on AT&T. Got tired of waiting for AT&T to get off their lazy asses!

Right now, Dev. Preview is not compatible with Nokia Cyan update, so I would not recommend that.

I've heard that some phones have had problems with the development preview, but it's been great even on my 520.

... But the Nokia Cyan firmware update and Developer Preview aren't compatible yet , so I would recommend that you wait for the official update.

I am on Sprint so all I have is the HTC 8XT. Great OS, not a great device. Resolution is too small for one. For Windows Phone Store Apps I have to use emulator screen shots to get the app posted in the store.

What does it bring besides Cortana?

I really don't care about Cortana. I don't use Google Now on my S4 and the whole idea is silly to me...

I am most excited about merging code bases!!!

Folders, individual volume settings, individual ringtone/notifications, notification center, IE 11, Bluetooth 4.0 (if radio capable), better battery life, Data Sense, Storage Sense, Battery Saver, WiFi Sense, better location awareness, better live tiles, new alarm settings, a much nicer lock screen, Swype-type keyboard, and likely a lot more

Individual Ringtone levels! Whoo, I actually had a suggestion on that one and remember now the email saying it was added/ completed...

Windows Phone 8.1 now offers separate volume controls for Ringer, Notifications as well as Media & Apps

Or Maybe that was a voted for... Anyway, that is almost worth the risk alone.

The update to IE11 on GDR1 has legitimately fixed all Kinja-based issues I had previously.
